In the early 1600s, settlers from England arrived on the east coast of the United States. The reason that settlers came over from England is because they were trying to escape the Anglican Church of England. These early settlers would come to be known as Puritans. Puritans were early settlers in the U.S. that believed in simple living. They were very interested in building a new world or "utopian" society in the U.S.. According to the early Puritans, a Utopian society was one that was free from sin, pain, and guilt where they could practice their faith freely and without persecution. John Winthrop points out many different instances where Boston will become a "city on a hill", but when he says "The Lord will be our God, and delight to dwell among us, as his [own] people, and will command a blessing upon us in all our [ways]", this popped out at me. This one phrase shows how much God is incorporated in their literature, and it pretty much says that God will help Boston become the "city on a hill". In my personal opinion, I don't think a perfect utopian society can exist in the world today, primarily because I don't think a single society in the world has people that do not sin daily. The one country that I think is close to becoming a Utopian society is definitely Singapore; a country where rules govern the people and are enforced daily. People such as murderers, thieves, and even corrupt business men keep the United States from becoming a utopian society.
